Grace UMC’S Sidewalk Ministry is held on Saturday mornings at the southwest corner of Reed Park, 1631 E. Broadway Rd., Mesa, 85204 with check-in at 10 a.m. and Worship at 10:30 a.m. from early October thru mid-May (weather permitting).
Sidewalk Ministry’s focus is to bring Christian fundamentals to children and their families in the Reed Park neighborhood. We teach empowerment through Christ and how to build a personal friendship with God in order to turn hearts, minds and actions toward a lifestyle of promise and hope for the future. Parents engage with planning, helping with bi-lingual presentation, neighborhood outreach and visitation, and working in partnership with Grace volunteers (called Shepherds) to present weekly worship, activities, and lunch.
Highlights of the year include Opening Session the first Saturday of the season, Christmas Celebration in mid-December, Adiós Fiesta in May, and Back to School support in early August.
Through the generosity of the Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church, Office of Outreach, Grace uses a brightly painted Sidewalk platform truck to carry and store equipment and materials. Grace welcomes the sharing of curriculum and guidance from the Desert Southwest Conference to deliver this program, as well.
Grace UMC has hosted this ministry since 2008, touching more than 100 families a year. The members of Grace and through a partnership with Resurrection Street Ministries of Mesa, we are able to provide lunch for children who attend on Saturday mornings. Per Grace’s Child Safety Policy, all Shepherds apply annually to work in this program and undergo background checks, to assure children are safe and well-cared for, while they are engaged at Sidewalk Ministry.
